Birgit is an associate professor of German at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. She started flipping her Beginning German courses in 2014 and now strongly endorses flipped learning to bring cross-cultural critical thinking to students of foreign languages. She is currently collaborating with her colleague Laura Levi Altstaedter on research about the efficacy of flipping foreign-language instruction (hint: they got excellent data so far!).
We discussed Flipped Learning as it applies to language learning, confusion between the terms flipped classroom and flipped learning and Birgit’s research.

This week Ken chats with Carolina Buitrago about her experiences with flipped classroom. Carolina is a university professor at Institución Universitaria Colombo Americana in Bogotá Colombia.
Carolina discusses her work in a teacher training environment and challenges working with adult learners. We also discuss the challenges to learners as well as instructors when changing roles in the learning process. What it is like to be “that lone wolf” in your own institution and how students deal with having flipped teachers mixed with non-flipped teachers in their programs.
This is the first time that I heard the word “fliperentiated”.
We also mentioned “one is never too old to innovate” and I shouted out to Moises from the UdGAgora project.
Some discussion about why blogging.

This time our regular co-host Adriana Ortega is busy with some other very important projects so Ken Bauer and Matthew Moore share the hosting duties to bring David Walsh to the podcast to talk mostly about non-linear flip. David joined us from his school so we have some background noise and apologize for that. Ken did his best cleaning up the alarms and will remember to save clips for a featured bloopers show perhaps in the future.
