Show Notes

This week Ken joins Laurita Garza to discuss her flipped classroom in Monterrey, México. We met in November 2017 at a workshop and I am so happy to share this wonderful interview here. Laurita is extremely creative, has so much energy and truly inspiring.

I am adding here that (as hinted in the episode) Laurita just started publishing on a blog, please check out her writing and encourage her to share more.

About our Guest

Laurita Garza is an Elementary Math teacher and basketball coach at Instituto Sima at Monterrey, Mexico. She started giving individual and group tutoring since 2008. She studied 7 semesters of Biomedical Engineering at Tecnológico de Monterrey but decided to study Bilingual Education instead, when she realized her devotion for having an impact on others through education. This is her 5th year teaching, she has six groups of students from 4th to 6th grade.

Laurita is a Flipped Learning Certified Trainer. She is flipping her 6th grade classes, the outcome has been very positive. Teacher-student relationships have grown stronger and kids are very enthusiastic towards their flipped math class. Students express their gratitude and eagerness every time they see a new video. Individual space is closer than ever to kid´s profile and interests and group space has reached very high performance and efficiency levels. Students that had a hard time following the class are now able to take their time while watching videos at home and have a deeper understanding.

She was invited by the district inspector to talk about FL to teachers from several schools and later on elected for teachers from those and other schools to visit one of her classes. Some of these teachers and colleagues are starting to flip their classes. She gave a conference of flipped learning as a solution for everyone at a university, which has 12 campus in 4 different states around Mexico, to professors and pedagogy students.

Her everyday work is inspired by the quote of a very important Mexican author, Octavio Paz, who said

“We must sleep with our eyes open, we must dream with our hands.”

Ken’s Take

One of the many advantages of flipped learning is the increased time spent individually or in small groups with our students. Laurita and I talked about connecting with our students and building trust by listening to them and their stories. Laurita recently posted this image on Twitter and I am 100% in agreement with this statement.
